Rural Electricity: conservation and economic development

To avoid illegal logging from Halimun National Park, and to foster the development of Palanggaran Village adjacent to the park, LEAD International has supported a program to generate electricity in the area. LEAD Fellow, Tri Mumpuni, through his institution IBEKA, developed a micro hydro power plant, to supply the electricity needs of the village.

There is no need to take woods from the national park to be used for daily cooking. The village has the benefits of having electricity as it supplies PLN (electricity state owned company) and get the revenue from it for the prosperity of the community, and to develop variety of new income using the electricity. The family can also enjoy entertainment from TV and radio, while students can study at night.
