Dear readers,
Welcome to our December newsletter where we're summing up the end of year updates for your preparation for 2008!
We embrace the Christmas and New Year 2008 with joyful and success stories of the LEAD International Training Session (ITS) 2007 on "Leadership and Climate Change," which was concluded in the first week of December in Jakarta and Bandung. We also joyfully embrace the success story of the UNFCCC climate change convention COP 13 in Bali, which almost faced a deadlock. However, this is just the beginning. Every nation of the world has now agreed that they will enter into accelerated negotiations and, by 2009, sign a new treaty to confront global warming, to set binding global targets for carbon emissions, and a mechanism for meeting them, that keep the earth's temperature from rising more than 2 degrees celsius - the amount that scientists say would be 'catastrophic'. Negotiators will fight it tooth and nail all the way. And we will too. LEAD efforts to put into action sustainable development will always be improved and developed. Updates of these efforts is reported in this LEAD newsletter.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 2008. Wish you and your family a peace and happiness year, with an always better earth environment.
Best Regards

Indonesia Hosted LEAD International Training Session 2007 in Bandung
|
|
Indonesia hosted a-week LEAD International Training Sesion (ITS) on "Leadership and Climate Change" in Lembang, Bandung, started from 26 December 2007. At the last day of the training on 1st December, the 120 participants from 26 countries compiled "The Bandung Declaration 2007", a series of appeal to the states and policy makers around the globe in response to the issue of climate change. The original title of the declaration was "The Bandung Declaration" but since in 1955 President Soekarno and state leaders from Asia and Africa countries had already issued the same title, so in order to distinghuish between Bandung Declarations, the mark of 2007 is added in the LEAD's Bandung Declaration to Response Climate Change. A Note from Chief Executive of LEAD International
The eyes of the world have been on Indonesia in the last couple of weeks during the Bali Climate Convention the CoP 13, and the eyes of the LEAD world have also been on Indonesia for slightly different, but related, reasons. The week before the Bali COP, LEAD Indonesia hosted the 2007 LEAD International Training Session (ITS), and they did a fantastic job. As much as 120 of this year's LEAD Fellows from almost 30 countries and a variety of backgrounds - from business, NGOs, Governments, the media and academia - gathered

for a week-long ITS focused on leadership and climate change. The idea was to give them a thorough understanding of climate issues, to enhance their leadership skills, and to give them the chance to network with fellow leaders from different parts of the world. It was a brilliant success, the best ITS I have ever been involved in. The Fellows were talented and lively, the sessions were well constructed, the speakers were excellent, the site visits were stimulating, and by the end the leaders present agreed on a "Bandung Declaration" - a message to the Bali CoP on measures they felt are necessary to show leadership on climate change.
