Community Enterprise for Fair Traded Fish
The Buleleng district in northern Bali, Indonesia is one of the world’s key exporters of ornamental, 'marine aquarium' fish. Northern Bali's coral reef, home of many of these fish, is under serious threat from destructive fishing methods, such as the use of cyanide and dynamite.
With the support of a three year (2005-2008) grant from the Darwin Initiative, a partnership of organisations worked successfully with four villages (Pejarakan, Sumber Kima, Pemuteran, and Penyabangan) to stop the use of destructive fishing practices and begin managing the marine resources in a sustainable way.
